Frequently Asked Questions
Your Questions. Professional Answers.
Why is dog training important?
Dog training is either prevention or rehabilitation of behavioural problems.
When should dogs start training?
As soon as possible, it's never too early or late to start training. Socialisation should be focused on from birth to 16 weeks, leading onto obedience from 4 - 12 months. Remember young dogs can be distracted easily and have a short attention span, be patient. Food motivation and toy play should be focused on in the early stages of a dogs life to support obedience training and drive in later stages.
Why crate training? Should I crate train?
The benefits of crate training are endless to list just a few, crate training;
1. Limits the formation of unwanted behaviours, especially in overtired puppies e.g nipping, barking, chewing etc.
2. Assists toilet training for puppies.
3. Creates a safe place for your dogs.
4. Helps with separation anxiety.
5. If they sustain an injury and need to be on strict rest.
Can dogs be trained without food?
Your dog isn't motivated with food? No worries, at K9 Connection we don't use food reward as our primary method of training. We do, however love to reward with praise and toy play. Food reward does have a place in dog training for key training methods however it is not the primary focus for our training.
Can dog trainers help with separation anxiety?
Yes, separation anxiety is all in the wording "separation", this will come with having more separation from your dog and learning the tips and tricks on how to do this. Signs can be dogs that always have to be on the bed, couch or lean against you in some way. Crate training and reinforcing dog bed commands can be good to build a dogs independence and confidence.
Can dog trainers help with aggression?
Yes, unfortunately aggression is a huge problem with a lot of dogs. We can provide you with the tools to manage these issues and spot the signs leading to a dog reacting such as fixating and change in body language. Aggressive reactivity can come from a variety of issues such as fear, anxiety or frustration from over excitement.
Can dog trainers help with barking?
Yes, if you allow your dog to bark inside the house they are going to continue to bark outside the house. We will give you guidance on how you can manage this. Barking can come from guarding, fear, anxiety or excitement to name a few. It is important to remember that dogs bark to communicate, there is nothing wrong with barking, it is uncontrolled continuous barking that should be focused on.
